About me
Hometown: Loudonville, OH
A class that changed your life: Honors English Colloquium, where my first paper in my first quarter was returned with the lowest grade I had ever received in my life. I was devastated and full of self-doubt. I remember calling home in tears, and my father assuring me that the professor was just setting the bar high—and that I could do it. Ten weeks later I had aced it and proven to myself that I could handle not only that class but lots more to follow. And the prof became a trusted advisor and friend.
Favorite Quote: “Self-respect cannot be bought. It is never for sale. It comes to us when we are alone in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth, we have spoken it.” -Griswold
Best college experience: Overall campus life—living in the res halls, eating with the lunch bunch, pulling all-nighters to write papers. It’s amazing what details I remember: the smoothness of the library study tables, the taste of Edna-the-cook’s beef barley soup, the elbow patches on my favorite prof’s blazer. And the friendships…ahhh, the friendships.
One piece of advice: Be There. Take it all in. The education and degree are, of course, the ultimate goal, yet these other experiences are a significant part of what make us the people we become.
