About college transcripts

What are "official" transcripts?
Official college transcripts are on special paper and have the seal of the school embossed into the paper. It's okay if the transcript is stamped "Issued to Student" as long as it's an official copy with the embossed seal.

Typically, when you request transcripts from a school, they'll mail them directly to UC Office of Admissions. We need to have all your transcripts before we can admit you to UC.

Do I have to provide all of my transcripts?
Yes. The Ohio Board of Regents strictly regulates the requirements for records we obtain before admitting students. Therefore, the answer to all of the following questions is "Yes."

I started college a long time ago, do I still need to bring transcripts?
Yes.

My transcripts from my second college show credits from my first college. Do I still need to get transcripts from my first college?
Yes.

I attended college but I did really badly. I'm willing to give up those credits and just start over. Do I still need transcripts from those schools?
Yes. But here's some encouraging news:

If you're a transfer student, your previous GPA is used to make an admission decision, but the GPA always starts over at a new university.

For returning UC students, your GPA may start over in keeping with UC's Fresh Start Policy.

About placement tests

Why do I have to take placement tests?
Placement tests help us determine what level of math, English and foreign language class you should start in. You cannot fail these tests. Math and English courses are required in all UC undergraduate programs as part of your General Education requirements. Foreign language is required by some programs.

Do placement test results affect whether or not I get accepted to UC?
No. They simply help us determine what level of math, English and language class you are eligible for once you are accepted into a UC program.

About orientation

What is the difference between the University orientation and College orientation?
A university is a large learning institution made up of several colleges. The University of Cincinnati offers many services that bridge all its colleges. But each college has a different overall "personality" with specialized faculty, facilities and services for the programs it offers.

  • University orientation is where you learn about university services such as parking, health insurance, campus organizations and activities, and how to transfer from one college to another if you ever need to.
  • College orientation is where you start to meet the faculty, staff and students you'll be working with in your academic program. You learn about advising services and facilities, and learn what it means to be part of your college.

Do I have to attend both the University orientation and a College orientation?
Every student attends the University orientation. Some colleges have orientation sessions and some will have only advising appointments. Your college will let you know when you need to attend a college orientation.

About tuition reciprocity

If I live within a few miles of Ohio, is there any way I can pay in-state tuition?
Yes! It's called tuition reciprocity, and it lets students pay in-state tuition for certain programs in some UC colleges. Learn more about tuition reciprocity at UC. (This link opens a PDF file. To read it you need Acrobat Reader, a free download from Adobe.)
